Does anyone else out there celebrate their half birthday? Because I do!
Today is officially my half birthday and I am now 26 (and a half) years old. I know it sounds crazy, but I have always wanted a summer birthday. I have had this wish ever since I was a kid for many reasons. The first reason was the fact that in the summer there were always a bunch of fun birthday party ideas – like going to the waterpark, riding on rollercoaster rides, or even having a camp fire. When your birthday is during the cold winter months in Minnesota, it usually involves no one being able to make it to your party because the roads are covered in ice. And if anyone were able to make it, you were forced to stay inside so your faces wouldn’t freeze off. The second reason is the December birthday curse. For all of the December babies out there, you know EXACTLY what I’m talking about! If your birthday happens to fall anywhere around Christmas time, you may or may not have experienced this said curse. It’s when either your birthday gift and Christmas gift are somehow combined in to being just one gift OR you want to celebrate and nobody is available because it is around the Holidays and everyone has prior commitments. I mean, it isn’t ALWAYS that way, but trust me, it definitely happens. That kind of curse is something a summer birthday will never have to experience.
Now, I must admit that I am one of the lucky ones. I happen to have the sweetest friends and family around and they truly do go out of their way to make me feel special (not just on my birthday) but all year around. I clearly remember one birthday while I was in college where Minnesota had one of the biggest snow storms of the century To make things worse, I also swore that I was on the verge of having strep throat. All of my birthday plans had been cancelled because 1. I felt like death and 2. there was an advisory out that nobody should be driving because it was just too dangerous. Regardless of everything that was going on, my parents STILL hopped in their car and drove all the way up to the cities just to take me out for a birthday dinner. What was usually only an hour drive for them took almost three hours, but they still did it because they loved me that much and they just wanted to make me feel special. Ugh…they truly are the best parents I could have ever asked for!
Another special birthday was actually the one I had this past year. I was in a new city and I was away from my friends and family, but somehow it ended up being one of the best birthdays to date. I was so excited when I woke up on December 8th and it was actually warm enough to wear open-toed shoes. For my birthday outfit, I slapped on some strappy gold heels and pulled out my party sweater that was covered in pom-poms, tassels, and giant sequins. If this little outfit didn’t just scream “IT’S MY BIRTHDAY AND I’M READY TO HAVE SOME FUN!” I don’t know what does haha. I didn’t know what the rest of the day was going to be like, but I knew that I would shimmy and dance my way through it in this outfit with the biggest smile on my face! My big day started and ended with my wonderful husband spoiling me and showering me with love. I seriously don’t know how I got so lucky to have him, but I am never letting him go!!! But what happened in between that morning and night was actually one of my biggest surprises.
It was a normal day at work (besides my obnoxious outfit) as our team hopped in a cab to go to a fashion shoot…or so I was told. We were suppose to be shooting at a location in midtown, but for some reason our cab was heading more towards the bottom of Manhattan. I didn’t think to question it because I was just happy to be along for the ride! When the cab pulled up along side the cutest little pink cafe, I almost lost it. I had seen Pietro NoLita all over Instagram and was dying to try it out – I mean, look at all of that beautiful PINK!!! My team told me to get out of the cab because they were surprising me with a special birthday brunch (they got me so good)! My boss also told me to bring her fancy camera along because she wanted to do a impromptu birthday photo shoot. I swear that in that moment I started to get a little teary eyed – I had never felt so loved and appreciated by two women that I had just recently started to work with. We laughed, we ate amazing food, we took a bunch of cute photos, and my heart was bursting-at-the-brims full. I was so worried about not being surrounded by the people I had known all my life on my birthday, but in that moment I realized that I was so lucky to have found such amazing friends and co-workers in my new home.
And now that I have written a novel, I am going to try and make this exiting paragraph short and sweet. To all of my December babies out there, don’t worry, I’ve got your back! And to everyone out there who knows a person with a birthday around the Holidays, please remember to always make them feel special – the December birthday curse can stink sometimes. And for anyone judging me for wanting to celebrate my half birthday, please don’t hate! I am honestly just looking for another reason to dress up in a cute outfit and eat a bunch a cake :)
